“The building process is very enjoyable to me and hand-tools are an important part of that. Spoke-shaves and hand-planes leave me ankle deep in shavings as I shape chair parts or plane a tabletop flat. Building cabinets satisfies engineering inklings while building chairs quenches the desire to work sculpturally.
“Windsor chairs and benches are my specialty and I have developed two lines of chairs. The Cod Rib Line came first and has a very modern, minimal look. My Waltham line is designed to have the look of traditional American Windsors, hand-tooled, finished in milk paint, and minimal in design.
“All of my chairs and benches incorporate my trademark “Floating Back” design in which, if there is an arm rail, it passes behind the back spindles. This allows the back to flex with the sitter. My chairs are designed to be beautiful to look at, comfortable, and to last a long, long time. I guarantee my work.”
A graduate of Middlebury College in 1985 with a B.A. in Spanish Language and Studio Art, Tim began making furniture professionally in 1986. He grew up in the Utica area of New York State. He now lives in Vermont with his wife, Mimi, son, Ben, and new daughter, Claire. His workshop is next door to his straw bale house that he built in 1998.
Tim spent a few years teaching furniture making and boatbuilding at the Shelburne Craft School as the Resident Woodworker and then began his own program, The Wood School in Burlington. He has also taught at The WoodenBoat School in Maine, Yestermorrow Design/Build, The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and the Lake Champlain Waldorf School.
For the past ten years, he has refocused his efforts towards making work for sale and not teaching. His work sells nationally and includes work for interior designers and architects as well as private individuals.
