The role of the artist, as seen by nineteenth century landscape painters such as Frederic Church and Asher Durand, is one of spiritual guide, taking the viewer on a journey into America's sacred spaces.  Native Vermonon that mission, distilling the essence of rural New England in panoramic oils.

Exposed to landscape paintings from an early age- his father's first wife Maude Perrin, was affiliated with Maxfield Parrish's "Cornish Colony", was a highly regarded regional painter- it was perhaps inevitable that his life among Vermont's verdant hills and river valleys would lead to canvases of his own.

Huntoon has built his technique along the lines of classic Flemish painting with its emphasis on creating light and depth with transparency.  From his use of traditional resin sizing and titanium white underbase through multiple layers of translucent pigment, Huntoon brings a significant level of craftsmanship to the painting, creating images of timeless beauty.

"The composition of light and color must not only invite the viewer into the picture, but afford a sense of communion between the viewer and the place."

He has shared his extensive experience teaching for the Vermont Academy, Trinity College, Community College of Vermont and The University Of Vermont.  His work graces many public and private collections throughout the country and he makes his home close to "the soul of the kingdom" in northern Vermont.
