Schmitz’s work draws from ordinary moments hidden within our daily lives that suggest thought, personal reflection, and contemplation. Times of solitude are for her not only poetic and poignant, but also something valued and cherished. These states of being illuminate a level of human experience for her and provide a great source of feeling and emotion upon which her work is made.
Schmitz holds a MFA in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of New Hampshire, in addition to studying at Studio Arts Center International in Florence, Italy.
Schmitz moved to Vermont following a one month artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center in the fall of 2006, when she discovered Vermont to have the inspirational qualities that she was looking for. In 2008 she represented the state of Vermont at Fitchburg Art Museum's biannual exhibition, New England/New Talent and received the Board of Directors Award for originality and excellence in the Fine Arts by Art's Alive in Burlington. Her work has been featured at Green Mountain College and has been included in exhibitions at Kyoto Seika University, Emory University, Northern Arizona University Art Museum, and Rogue Space Chelsea, New York. Schmitz continues to actively exhibit her work throughout Vermont and New England and has her work, including commissions, in private collections located throughout the United States and abroad.
