My interest in photography grew out of a childhood spent close to nature on the island of North Hero, which is on the Vermont side of Lake Champlain, Vermont. It was reinforced by my father, who recorded our family's important moments with 35mm film. When I attended college in the 1970's, one of my professors was a Leica camera buff and sparked the same interest in me. Once I had this capable tool, well known for its use in photojournalism, I turned my newfound knowledge into a minor college study. As I developed my photos on leather-like double-weight paper in trays of chemicals, caught up in anticipation as each one began to appear under the dim red filtered lights. I found myself fascinated by the beauty of imagery produced solely in shades of white to deep black. After graduating from college I continued to use photography to record my life and also turned this passion into a career as the Communication Photographer for IBM Microelectronics in Essex Junction, Vermont.
I enjoy working and experimenting with large, medium and 35mm-format B&W photography, both film and digital. I create images to feed my visual comprehension and attraction to the medium, not to please others or to sell photographs. I hope viewers experience the same physical resonance that I do, drawing them into the images and embodying connections to places, people, objects, form, shadow, highlight and composition. Enjoy the feeling!
